Final Results
In order to play in the 2014 TYGA Tournament of Champions you needed to earn your way by winning a pervious TYGA event. That might be why some of the best golf was played over the past two days in Southern Pines, NC at Hyland Golf Club. Stephen Hart of Fayetteville, NC shot back to back 68’s, on the over 6,800 yard par 72 layout to win the Boys’ overall championship by two strokes, as well as the Boys’ 16-18 Division. Finishing in second over all but first in the Boys’ 14-15 Division was Dalton Mauldin from Sanford, NC. Blake Taylor of Atkinson, NC finished solo second in the Boys’ 16-18 Division just four shots back of Hart. While Seth Lomison, Pfafftown, NC finished his summer golf with a final round 70 placing him third in the Division. Brian Chen of Cary, NC and AJ Beechler of Pinehurst, NC finished tied for second behind Mauldin in the Boys’ 14-15 Division.
Chris Kim of Cary, NC shot the low round of the tournament, 63, in his first round helping him win the Boys’ 12-13 Division with a two day score of 12 under par. It was not easy for Kim as good friend and playing competitor, Akshay Bhatia of Wake Forest, NC came out firing a second round 65, which was enough for a second place finish at eight under par. A three way tie for third was shared amongst: Whit Edwards Jr. of Greensboro, NC, Alex Huml of Cary, NC, and Symon Balbin of Pinehurst, NC.
Taylor Hinson captured the overall Girls’ championship with scores of 75-76 for a 151 total. Alicia Marion won the Girls’ 16-18 Division finishing just two shots behind Hinson for the overall championship. Brianna Plummer of Shelby, NC finished in solo second behind Marion in the Girls’ 16-18, while Katy Flax of Wilmington, NC placed third. Sarah Funderburg used a second round 78 to jump up the leaderboard propelling her to a solo second finish in the Girls’ 14-15 Division. Janie Gooch of Raleigh, NC finished in third place for the Division.
After six playoff holes in the Girls’ 12-13 Division, Muskan Uppal of Cornelius, NC finally could declare herself the victor. Kayla Parsons of Cary, NC and Uppal finished regulation tied for first. The pair headed back out for an exciting playoff in which Uppal won with a par on the sixth hole. Natalie Lutz of Kings Mountain, NC finished third after a great second round that had just a single blemish, as she had a dreaded 10 after hitting a ball out of bounds..
There was excitement in the 11 and under Division as Andrew Graham of Asheville, NC needed a par on the first playoff hole to capture the championship. Branden Boyce of Spring Lake, NC, tied Graham after two rounds and finished in solo second place after bogeying the first hole. Ryder Jeske of Chapel Hill, NC placed third in the very competitive 11 and Under Division.
