Boys Bunch Up, While Petersen Pulls Away

HIGH POINT, N.C. (July 13, 2016) – First round results from the Tarheel Youth Golf Association High Point Junior Open at Blair Park Golf Course in High Point, N.C. on July 13, 2016.

Faced with a hot, breezy day at Blair Park Golf Course players dealt with a challenging first round of golf for the High Point Junior Open. Christian Bailey of Matthews, N.C., and Gray Carlton of Charlotte, N.C., tied for the lead going into the second round by shooting 71, one-under-par. Bailey stated that he “did not expect much” going into this morning’s round. “I hit my driver really well today, which helped a lot. I hit almost every fairway so that made up for how bad I was hitting my irons,” he said. The rising senior was “able to scramble” around the greens, including “making a 35-foot put on the No.18 to save par and stay under par.”

Defending champion Natalie Petersen of Holly Springs, N.C., came out firing shooting an impressive round of 67, five-under-par. Coming into today, Petersen “just wanted to play well and beat” her score from last year. She stated “that would be difficult to do, but I was able to beat it by three strokes” to shoot 67. When asked about what went well today on the course, she said her iron game was what allowed her to score. “I had almost the same club in on a lot of the holes and I was hitting them to about five feet,” Petersen stated. Going into the second round, she said she “can spare a few pars, but needs to make at least half as many birdies as today.”

Boy’s 16-18 Age Division

Christian Bailey of Matthews, N.C., and Gray Carlton of Charlotte, N.C., are tied in their division after finishing one-under-par 71.

Boy’s 14-15 Age Division

Gibby Shea of Charlotte, N.C., held off his fellow competitors by posting a score of one-over-par 73.

Boy’s 12-13 Age Division

Paxton Jones of Greensboro, N.C., shot a solid round of even par, 72, to lead his division after the first round.

Girl’s 14-18 Age Division

Natalie Petersen of Holly Springs, N.C., was able to post the low round of the day shooting five-under-par 67.
