The Race is On at the Tournament of Champions

Winston-Salem, N.C. (AUGUST 16, 2016) – First round results from the Tarheel Youth Golf Association’s Tournament of Champions at Maple Chase Golf and Country Club in Winston-Salem, N.C. on August 16, 2016.

On a very hot summer day, Nicholas Page of Dunn, N.C. and Chris Kim of Cary, N.C. were both able to finish with a score of three-under-par, 69.  Page stated that, “I hit the driver really well and I hit my wedges pretty good and I made a few putts.”  He went on to say that “hitting fairways” was the key to his success to todays round, “especially during the back nine to hit greens and the greens could be kind of tricky.  You had to get the right speed.”  Coming into today, Page said he “just wanted to break 75 because I have been struggling lately and didn’t play well during my last tournament.” Going into tomorrow tied for the lead, he trying to do “the same thing.  Hit fairways, hit some greens and try to make some putts.”

Samantha DeBusk of Lexington, N.C. was able to take the lead going into the final round with a score of 76.  When asked about her round, Debusk stated, “I started out with a birdie so I knew it was going to be a good day.”  After getting off to a good start, playing the first four holes of her round at one-under, she hit a rough stretch, but able to get it back together and shot 37 on her second nine.  She stated that her putting was “a lot better than it has been the rest of the summer,“ which allowed her to keep her round alive.  “I was getting kind of nervous because I never shot under 80 before so I was just trying to make sure I didn’t think about my score.”  Going into tomorrow DeBusk’s plan of attack is to “don’t worry about score, don’t worry about what other people are doing, it is just you and the course, and just have fun.”
